The shape of the offer
Forty-five separate search phrases in our keyword research point at this one offer, which makes it the single most researched exchange bonus we cover. Almost all of the pages ranking for them describe the reward and skip the requirement.
The published structure has three steps. Register through a referral link, completing signup in the app in that same session. Complete identity verification. Then lock CRO — Crypto.com's own token — on the Exchange.
The reward is paid in CRO.
Read those two facts together and the offer looks different from the advertising. You are not being given money for opening an account. You are buying a token, committing it for a fixed period, and being paid a quantity of the same token for doing so. Whether that is attractive depends entirely on a question the referral pages never ask: did you want to hold CRO?
A token reward is not a cash reward
A $50 bonus paid in dollars is worth $50. A $50 bonus paid in a token you must hold for a year is worth whatever that token is worth in a year, which nobody knows. Both are called a $50 bonus.
What locking CRO means
The lock is not an obstacle bolted onto the bonus. It is the core mechanic of the whole Crypto.com account model, and the bonus is one benefit hanging off it.
Users can lock CRO for periods such as 180 or 365 days to unlock a tier of benefits. Depending on the tier, those can include trading fee reductions, higher cashback rates, real-world perks such as airport lounge access, and a return comparable to a savings rate on the locked amount.
So the honest framing is that you are entering a commitment product. The capital is not available during the term. In exchange you get a bundle of benefits, one of which is the signup reward.
That is a legitimate product and plenty of people use it deliberately. It is simply not what "sign-up bonus" implies to somebody who has seen a Coinbase or Gemini offer, where you deposit, trade and keep your money liquid throughout.
Why yours shows as locked
"Crypto com sign up bonus locked" and "unlock sign up bonus" are among the most common phrasings people search. Here is the plain answer.
It is locked because locking is what you agreed to. The reward is consideration for the commitment, so releasing it early would remove the thing being paid for. There is no trick, no support ticket that resolves it, and no setting to change.
What people usually mean by the question is one of two things:
- "When does it unlock?" — at the end of the term you selected, which is visible in the app against your locked position.
- "Can I get out early?" — ending a lock early, where permitted at all, generally forfeits the associated benefits. Check the current terms in-app rather than a forum post.
This is the same category of misunderstanding covered on our bonuses page: a balance on a screen is a claim, not a payment. Treat any bonus as unearned until it has been withdrawn once. That rule would have saved a great many of the Reddit threads this search leads to.
The referral side
The other half of the programme pays existing users for bringing new ones, and the numbers quoted around the web need the same careful reading.
The published structure pays the referrer in CRO, plus a share of the referred user's trading fees for a defined period. It is capped.
Large figures circulate for this programme. Those describe the cap across many successful referrals, each of whom must complete KYC and lock CRO for anything to pay out. Reaching the cap means recruiting a substantial number of people who all commit capital. For an individual referring a few friends, the realistic outcome is a small fraction of the headline.
This is the general pattern with referral marketing in crypto and it is worth recognising: the advertised number is a theoretical maximum for a high-volume affiliate, presented as though it were a consumer offer. Our offshore exchange page takes that pattern apart in more detail, because that is where it reaches its most extreme form.
Valuing it honestly
Four questions produce a realistic number, and they take about two minutes.
Would you hold CRO without the bonus?
If no, the reward is a payment in an asset you did not choose, and the honest value is whatever you would sell it for after the lock expires, not its value today.
What is the capital worth locked up for that term?
Money committed for a year is money you cannot deploy or withdraw. Price that against the reward before calling it free.
Would you use the tier benefits anyway?
Lower trading fees and higher cashback have real value to an active user. To somebody who buys occasionally, they are close to worthless.
What is the tax position?
A token bonus is normally income at its market value on receipt, and that value becomes your cost basis. See our tax guide.
Where we land
For somebody who already wanted CRO exposure and plans to use the card and the fee tiers, this is a coherent product and the bonus is a reasonable extra. That is a real group of people and we are not being sniffy about them.
For somebody who arrived from a search for free crypto, it is a token purchase with a lock-up dressed as a gift. Knowing which of the two you are is the entire decision.
